About Our Founder

Sharon Cumbers is the founder of Lantern & Ledger and author of When the Centre Shifts.  Her book introduces the Sentinel role in organisations and leadership roles.

Lantern & Ledger is a consultancy dedicated to supporting church leaders as they navigate complex and sensitive situations within faith communities.

Over the course of a long career in policing, our founder worked closely with situations involving vulnerability, family violence, and sensitive disclosures—where the way a situation was handled mattered just as much as the outcome itself.

These experiences revealed a consistent pattern: even within well-intentioned systems, clarity can be lost under pressure. Decisions can become reactive, processes can overtake people, and the weight of responsibility can leave leaders uncertain about the right course of action.

With more than two decades in roles that demand integrity, accountability, and careful judgment, Sharon brings a thoughtful, principled approach to leadership guidance. Her work focuses on helping faith organisations respond wisely when difficult issues arise, particularly in safeguarding, leadership integrity, and governance.

What was often needed was not more policy, but clear, steady thinking.
A way to slow situations down, understand what truly matters, and respond in a way that holds both care and accountability together.

Lantern & Ledger was created to bring that clarity into faith-based settings.

With real-world experience navigating complex, sensitive matters, our founder established Lantern & Ledger to help organisations respond thoughtfully, act with integrity, and keep individuals at the centre of every decision.

Sharon is passionate about equipping church leaders with practical frameworks to respond to sensitive matters with courage, care, and clarity. Through leadership workshops, advisory support, and governance reviews, she helps churches strengthen safeguarding culture and build communities where truth is honoured and the vulnerable are protected.

It is her prayer that faith communities be strengthened through wise leadership, thoughtful care, and a commitment to protecting the dignity of every person.

Our Manifesto

Church communities hold a unique place of trust.

People come seeking faith, belonging, and hope.

They look to churches for guidance, care, and support.

Because of this trust, leadership carries great responsibility.

From time to time, difficult moments arise.

Concerns are raised.

Painful truths come into the light.

Complex, deeply sensitive situations emerge.

In these moments, leadership's response matters.

How truth is received.

How people are treated.

How decisions are made.

These responses shape whether trust is strengthened or broken.

Lantern & Ledger exists because we believe churches can navigate these moments with wisdom, integrity, and care.

We believe bringing truth into the light strengthens communities.

We believe protecting the vulnerable is not merely a requirement, but a moral responsibility.

We believe leadership requires courage — the courage to listen, seek clarity, and act with integrity even when the path forward is difficult.

When leaders respond thoughtfully and responsibly, churches remain places where people feel safe to speak, where dignity is upheld, and where trust can grow.

Lantern & Ledger supports church leaders in these moments.

We provide guidance, training, and leadership frameworks to help faith organisations respond with courage, care, and clarity so their communities remain places where truth is honoured, and people are protected.

Our story

Lantern & Ledger grew out of extensive experience working in environments where sensitive situations, vulnerability, and high-stakes decision-making were part of everyday practice.

Over time, a consistent challenge became clear—when pressure increases, clarity often decreases.

Leaders are expected to respond quickly, yet the complexity of these situations requires thoughtful, balanced decision-making.

It became evident that organisations did not need more policy—they needed clear, steady guidance.

Lantern & Ledger was established to meet that need—supporting faith-based organisations to respond wisely, act with integrity, and ensure individuals remain at the centre of every decision.

Our Benediction

May you see clearly,
and not turn away.

May you speak with care,
and not remain silent.

May you act with courage,
and not delay what protects.

May you stand where it matters,
even when it costs.

And may you remain steady—
knowing that what is done in truth

is never without consequence.
