Truth: shining a light
We believe that difficult truths must be brought into the light with courage and honesty. Responding wisely begins with acknowledging reality, even when it is uncomfortable. Truth, handled with care, strengthens trust and protects the integrity of the faith community. It's the bedrock upon which genuine healing and progress are built.

Protection of the vulnerable
Safeguarding the vulnerable is a fundamental responsibility of leadership. Those who disclose harm must be treated with dignity, compassion, and seriousness. The well-being and safety of individuals must never be secondary to protecting reputation or avoiding difficulty. We champion systems that prioritise people over perception.

Integrity and courage in leadership
Leaders must act with integrity, accountability, and responsibility. Decisions should reflect honesty, transparency within leadership structures, and a commitment to doing what is right, even when situations are complex and challenging. Wise leadership requires courage to face difficult conversations and implement necessary changes.
A Lantern and Ledger story: why these principles matter
One evening after a service, a young woman quietly asked if she could speak with one of the church leaders. Her voice was hesitant as she shared something painful that had happened some time ago. In that moment, the leader knew the first responsibility was courage—the courage to listen and allow the truth to come into the light, even though the conversation might lead into difficult territory.
As she spoke, the leader responded with care, ensuring she felt heard, respected, and safe enough to continue sharing what she had been carrying alone. The leadership team later met and took time to seek clarity. Rather than reacting quickly or quietly dismissing the concern, they carefully understood their responsibilities and what steps were needed to respond wisely. Throughout the process, they acted with integrity, documented their decisions, sought appropriate guidance, and ensured their actions reflected accountability and responsibility.
Their priority remained the protection of the vulnerable, ensuring that the person who had spoken up was supported and that the wider community was safe. And instead of rushing decisions, the leaders exercised wisdom, taking thoughtful steps that balanced pastoral care with responsible governance. Because those values guided their response, the outcome was different from what might have happened otherwise. The person who came forward felt believed and supported. The leadership team grew stronger and more confident in how to respond to difficult situations. And the church community saw that truth was honoured and people were protected.
In that way, the church remained what it was always meant to be—a place of sanctuary where courage, care, and clarity protect both individuals and the community.
This story encapsulates how our values guide real-world impact.
